Imam Hussain’s uprising was not but to defend the religion of God
Sometimes doubt is cast as to why do you call it the uprising of Imam Hussain (as)? Imam Hussain (as) did not revolt. He left Medina for Mecca since it was safer. There, he was informed that the government agents want to assassinate him. Following this information, he left Mecca for Iraq. On his way to Iraq he was confronted by Hurr and his soldiers. The Imam (as) suggested that he would go somewhere else if they would let him. Hurr answered that he had been ordered to be strict with the Imam (as) and to keep him in a barren land and not let him go anywhere else. Thereafter, Imam Hussain (as) had no choice other than fighting which eventually resulted in his death. Why do you call this uprising?
But after studying the sayings of Imam Hussain (as) and other authentic religious evidence it becomes clear that this movement was nothing but an uprising to defend the religion of God….
Observe the words of Imam Hussain (as) carefully. In the very first session where he was invited by Marwan and offered either of two ways, i.e. paying allegiance or death, Imam Hussain (as) stated, “The Imam of the Muslim community is not but the one who rules according to the Quran”, he announced that the ruler of the Muslims must be able to understand the Quran and he should act according to the Quran. Yazid knew nothing of the Quran to act according to it. Did Yazid, who openly violated Quranic rules and commandments, act according to the Quran? Imam Hussain (as) continued, “The Imam of the Muslims should exercise justice, be committed to the religion of God and restrict himself to the will of God.” The leader of the Muslim community, according to the Imam (as), should devote himself to the commandments of God and all his words and actions must be for the Lord of the universe.

Part of speech made by Ayatulla Fazel Lankarani (may God prolong his life) in mourning ceremony for Imam Hussain (as) organized by Bouye Sibe Hoseini, Muharram 1441
